Other sightseeing

Let's see -- I left home Wednesday morning bright and early, drove to within 100 miles of New York City, slept a few hours (about 2 a.m. - 5 a.m.) and drove on. I got to my campground around 11 a.m. Thursday, set up camp and slept a bit more. Went out for dinner and then crashed for a good night's sleep.

Friday I planned to drive up into Maine and play some golf, 9 holes in Maine first, then 9 holes in New Hampshire (state motto: Live Free or Die! Gotta love that!) but as soon as I crossed the state line from Mass. into NH it started to rain. Poured, heavy rainfall. I continued on into Maine, and took my time driving back down the coastal highway of Maine. It stopped raining for a while, but got beastly hot and humid, so I wasn't too keen on playing any golf in that!

As I drove back through NH and Mass., the rain started up again, and it's never stopped much until now.

So I decided to keep driving and see Cape Cod. I drove out U.S. 6 all the way along that peninsula, clean to the curly-q tip at Provincetown. It was okay, falling into the category of "I did it just to say I did", but there weren't a lot of nice beaches (not that I saw anyway) and the road was always out of sight of the water. So kind of disappointing.

Saturday I planned to go to the Newport Country Club for the volunteer party. I hoped to meet my hole captain and get a little bit of training in what I'm supposed to do. She had said she would be on the 17th hole (our assignment) at 5 p.m., but right at 5 the rain commenced to dump bucketloads. So I missed touching base with her.

Before I went to the country club, though, I took a little time to find a mall in Providence, RI. Didn't buy a thing, just walked around where it was dry...!

Today is Sunday, and I headed up to Boston this morning. Keith had said to try to do the Freedom Trail in old, downtown Boston, so I took off to find that. I did -- finally -- manage to find it, but wow -- you'd think that part of town was built in horse and buggy days! Tiny streets, no parking (well, by resident permit only). I drove in front of the Old North Church (the one where Paul Revere is supposed to have put the lantern signalling the approach of the redcoats). I let that be enough and headed back.

As an aside -- I've never seen tunnels that had exit ramps in them!! They do underneath Boston!
