August Rush

Finally, I've seen a movie that's worth blogging about. And since this blog is supposed to be about "books, movies, and golf", I'm glad to get to be back on subject.

August Rush. One of the finest movies I've seen in a very long time! I can't remember ever feeling like getting back in line to see a movie a second time back-to-back, but this one made me want to do so. The movie is long on amazing coincidences, but so what? Moviemakers get to do that. Mostly I just was swept up by the way they portray all the music around us, and not just boom boxes and loud thumping car stereos... The music, the symphony, in the sound of the wind chimes, the honking of horns, the bells of streetcars, the brush of a street sweeper, and how it all pulls together in the mind of an eleven-year-old musical prodigy.

And you won't believe they way they weave together the sounds of a classical cello concerto with an Irish rock band -- it's fabulous!

Here's a quote I snagged from rottentomatoes.com, from Linda Cook of the Quad City Times: "As a real-life story, this would be preposterous. But as a fantasy ode to the spiritual qualities of music in our lives, it works beautifully."

Rottentomatoes compiles all the reviews, and only gives it a 37% rating -- but that just goes to show you how the critics are out of touch with us average folks. The everyday users give it an 80% rating.

Go see it. You'll love it! August Rush web site here
